A new type of organic fertiliser Arvo from Kariniemen chicken manure

Biolan is processing a new type of fertiliser for field farming from the manure generated in the Kariniemen chicken farming. Arvo fertiliser performed well in the Agrofood Ecosystem® farm trials and the pilot activities will be extended to next summer. The circular use of manure is an important part of HKScan’s Zero Carbon climate plan.

Manure of Kariniemen chickens contains valuable nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic matter. Kariniemen chicken manure has long been used as a raw material in Biolan’s consumer fertilisers. Now Biolan has used the manure to develop Novarbo’s Arvo recycled fertiliser, also suitable for organic farming. Arvo fertiliser was tested by HKScan’s contract farmers in the growing season 2020.

Circular economy fertiliser works

The aim of the farm trials was to gain more experience of the practical functionality and suitability of the recycled fertiliser in the farming of protein plants. The trials were made on three different livestock farms.

The farm of Taina and Anssi Jalava in Eura, Finland, was one of the producer participants. Their farm of 155 hectares grows autumn and spring wheat, peas and barley. Last summer, Arvo fertiliser (3-1-15-5) was tested on peas. Nutritional proportions of the fertiliser meet the needs of peas and broad beans, due to low nitrogen and high potassium and sulphur levels. 

The yield measured at harvest in the Arvo fertilised block was 4,330 kg/ha while in the mineral-fertilised block the yield was 4,730 kg/ha. The yield difference was 400 kg/ha.

“I am pleased with the yield level as the growing season in the summer 2020 was not ideal. The growing time of peas was long. Although we were able to sow early, dry early summer and rainy late summer slowed ripening; harvesting was not possible until mid-September”, says Anssi Jalava.

Differences in fertilising techniques 

The farmer thinks that the yield difference between organically and mineral-fertilised blocks was primarily due to the fact that part of Arvo fertiliser was applied to the surface and the fertilising effect was not as good as with fertiliser placement made using mineral fertiliser.

Farm trials coming to grain farms

Next summer, farm trials will be extended to include the fields of grain farmers as well. The aim is to provide grain farmers with a turnkey service that includes the transfer and field application of loose manure. Broiler manure can be delivered to the farm directly or through Biolan’s composting process.

Livestock manure with a wide range of benefits on crop farms

Crop farms benefit from organic livestock manure. It helps the farms to reduce the amount of industrial fertilisers. Livestock manure stimulates microbial activity and diversity in the soil increasing the amount of carbon in the soil. Together, these factors contribute to the health and structure of the soil, which in turn reduces the risk of erosion and nutrient leaches and increases yield capacity.
