We make food from responsibly produced raw materials in the middle of the cleanest nature in the world. Fresh air, abundant water resources and a high level of expertise available make the Baltic Sea region an excellent place for responsible food production. We continuously reduce our environmental impacts and promote sustainable use of resources.
We are on our way towards a carbon-neutral food chain – we challenge ourselves our partners for more responsible food.
Reducing climate impacts, improving energy and water efficiency, promoting material efficiency and eco-friendly packaging are at the heart of our environmental work. We are determinedly looking for solutions to reduce environmental impacts throughout our production chain. In the Agrofood Ecosystem model, we open-mindedly explore new ways to develop the responsibility of our value chain together with our partners.
Global or local?
The environmental impacts of food production vary significantly across the globe. Climate impacts are global and common to all, but for example water sufficiency or overgrazing are local challenges. At HKScan, we play our part for the benefit of both the global climate impacts and local environmental impacts in the countries we operate.
For example, the climate impact of beef production varies significantly between different countries due to different climatic and soil conditions and different production methods. Grassland farming common in the Nordic countries is inherently diverse and, for example, acidification, overgrazing, loss of biodiversity or decreased water resources are not a challenge. Cattle are able to utilise grass as nutrition and year-round vegetated grass fields sequester bind carbon from the atmosphere.
