HKScan’s environmental work

We do goal-oriented work to reduce environmental impacts of our operations in our almost 20 production units and offices. We particularly focus on reducing climate emissions as well as energy and water consumption.

Between 2014 and 2019, we already reduced the greenhouse emissions of our operations by over 50 per cent. The good development results from increased use of renewable energy and improved energy efficiency. In the reporting of climate emissions, we follow the guidance of the GHG Protocol.

We encourage our personnel to take environmental impact into consideration in their daily work. In fact, we have carried out many of the ideas we have received from our employees. Thanks to these ideas, we have managed to reduce, for example, the consumption of energy and water at many of our production units.

Sparing use of energy

We conduct energy audits in our production units to find ways to improve energy efficiency.

Responsible use of water

In our productions, we use water mainly to ensure hygiene and product safety. In addition, we use a small amount of water to make the products.

All materials for utilisation

By efficiently utilising materials, we can significantly reduce our environmental impact. For us, material efficiency means, for example, reducing production losses and food waste, utilising by-product material flows and promoting the recyclability of packaging. We utilise our raw materials carefully and direct our production by-products as efficiently as possible to other industries, such as the leather, feed and pet food industries. Unused materials of animal origin are used for biogas production.

In Finland, we are committed to the material efficiency commitment of the food industry sector.
