Sustainable packaging

The best packaging ensures food preservation, is easy to use and recyclable, and uses only as much packaging material as is necessary.

We have set ambitious goals for our packaging by the end of 2030:

  • 100% recyclable packaging
  • 80% of packaging renewable or recycled materials

The primary purpose of packaging is to protect foods. A good package is part of ensuring quality and product safety. Functional packaging also reduces food waste. We take many aspects into account in our packaging development work. In addition to the key goals, i.e. recyclability and the reduction of plastic and carbon footprint, choices are influenced by many things, such as the food shelf life, functioning and attractiveness of packaging, recyclability of material, and packaging and recycling costs.

Packaging accounts for a very small share of the carbon footprint of our products. When only a couple of ham slices in the package are not eaten, the negative environmental impact of the waste is much greater than the carbon footprint of the packet. Reducing food waste is the best way to reduce environmental impacts.

Rid of black plastic

In 2019, we abandoned the use of non-recyclable black plastic boxes in the packaging of our branded products in Finland and Sweden.

HK® minced meat into bag packs

The new bag packs of HK minced meat came to the store shelves in the autumn 2020. The new packs have 71% less plastic than the traditional box packs. Thanks to the new packaging, the amount of packaging plastic is reduced by about 100,000 kilos per year.

Less plastic in the Scan® minced meat and meat ball packaging

In Sweden, the Scan brand’s minced meat packaging was renewed in 2020 into a thin plastic film, which significantly reduced the amount of packaging plastic and extended the shelf life of the product. In 2018, Mamma Scans meat balls were packaged in recyclable bag packs.

Tallegg's environmentally friendly bags

In Estonia, new Tallegg’s Easy to Fry products are packed in environmentally friendly bags with plastic saving of 25 per cent compared to a conventional box.

Recycled plastic in Rose product packaging

In Denmark, some of the Rose broiler products are packed into boxes made from recycled plastic.
