Companies can reduce emissions from electricity use in two ways: by optimising energy consumption, which in turn reduces the impact of energy-related carbon emissions, or by switching to renewable electricity. HKScan Latvia has chosen to follow both routes, both at the Jelgava plant and in the logistics centre in Riga, switching only to renewable electricity. These changes reduced carbon emissions by almost 2,000 tonnes in 2020.

“We are implementing the transition to the use of renewable energy in accordance with the strategy of the entire HKScan Group, which aims to reduce our climate impact and ensure long-term development. Our choice also provides benefits for export markets, where it is increasingly important for existing and new partners to work with a company that is conscious of minimising its environmental impact and taking steps to reduce carbon emissions,” says Heino Lapiņš, Sales Director of HKScan Latvia.

HKScan Latvia has received an EECS RES-GO certificate, which proves that the electricity used is entirely produced from renewable energy sources.

Targeting Carbon Neutrality

HKScan’s environmental work is based on reducing climate impact, improving energy and water use efficiency, promoting material efficiency and the use of environmentally friendly packaging. HKScan aims to achieve the carbon neutrality of its industrial production by the end of 2025 and to achieve carbon neutrality at all stages of the food chain – throughout the farm to consumer – by the end of 2040.
